Blyde River Canyon

[EN] Let`s travel to South Africa, more precisely in Transvaal region, where the Drakensberg Mountains rise above de valley of Blyde River Canyon. Over time the Blyde River has managed to form the only green canyon on Earth, which is the third after The Great Canyon from SUA and The Fish River Canyon from Namibia.  Mountains with green ridges, spectacular waterfalls and abandoned mine holes are reunited in a divine landscape. The Blyde River Canyion marks the border between the South African plateau and Lowveld East area.

Acestia sapau in zidurile masivului pentru a extrage aur.
[EN] On the cave walls we can find paintings lefted here by the bosiman wild people. Before the bosimans, thousand years ago, this valley was crossed by the gold seekers. The mountain rock was full of gold in the Stone Age times.

[EN] The Drakensberg Mountains host many living species, including monkeys, kudu antelopes, leopards, hippos or otters. Also, in this area, appear from time to time the baboons which scare with their roar the beautiful rare birds who live here as well.

[EN] The name of the canyon was given by the river who formed it. The river in its turn was named around 1840s when a group of travelers brought here, their wives and children, after that, they gone to explore the area. In their absence, the ladies, named the hillside near the camp `Treur` which  means `angry`. After their husbands came home, they have chosen another name, for the valley this time. The name was `Blyde` which means `joy`. So The Blyde River Canyon is the most beautiful canyon in the world and bears the name of happiness.
